Encoders and Decoders

Impulse 200E encoder

Video Encoders and Decoders are necessary components used to carry the audio and video signal from one point to another via the internet, via fiber or via wi-max point to point.

They are used, for instance, to send signals to satellite providers or to the DVBT transmission position.
Some portable models can be used to send the ENG camera signal to production during live events or journalistic reportages.

What is a video encoder and decoder?

Video encoders and decoders are essential components in the process of capturing, compressing, transmitting, and displaying video content. Their use extends to broadcasting, video streaming, video conferencing and other multimedia applications.

Video Encoder

A video encoder, or video compressor, converts raw video input into a compressed format. This compression is necessary to reduce the size of the video file, thus allowing better storage and transmission over networks.
Common compression standard for codecs (coder-decoder) are: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), VP9, and AV1. They all guarantee and maintain acceptable video quality.

As previously mentioned, video encoders are used for a number of different applications, such as: video streaming platforms, video surveillance systems, video production, broadcasting.

Video Decoder

A video decoder, or video decompressor, reverses the compression process performed by the encoder. It reconstructs the compressed video data into a format that can again be displayed and manipulated.

The standards a video decoder can decompress will be the same of the video compression.
Decoders allow users to watch compressed video on a number of devices (smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, computers, etc.) without significant loss of quality.

Transcoding

An interesting feature of codecs is the ability to transcode video content from one codec to another. This is done in order to adapt the same content to different devices, network conditions, or streaming services.
Transcoding is mostly used in video streaming, allowing the streaming platforms to offer content in multiple formats – in order to adapt to all devices – and for various network speeds.
